As modern information technology like tablet computers, laptops and PDA’s develops a presence in the current school system, it is essential for educators, students and parents to understand the role of these modern technologies in today’s society. Students and mostly educators will definitely benefit to more sources of information which makes learning accessible. The bring-your-own-device policy that is being introduced in today’s school system was almost passed in our school county.
The bring-your-own-device policy does not enable the students to bring their own electronic devices like cell phones, tablets and laptops for pleasure use; but it takes one step away from educators to use their own resources in class if needed. The educators do not need approval from school administrators to use their own devices if the policy will take place.
Although “The policy was well written,” according to Principal Michael Byers; the county still preferred more information to be presented to them .
There are still some issues that need to be pondered such as if the “district’s network will support the volume of students and educators who will try to access the system; and types of acceptable devices that can be consented to use,” says Principal Byers.
Other issues that need to be deliberated upon are the “The types of programs that can be offered to students who have no access to these devices and training and policing everyone.” according to Principle Byers.
Although, the policy was not passed it does not limit the use of technology in Stafford County compared to other counties. Teachers can still enable their students to use their technologies with special administration approval.
The use of Technology in school is a privilege, and maybe if all the other counties that have access to technology show great academic achievement, then possibly the school law will migrate to Stafford, Virginia.
