Around April 18th forest fires started in the North Carolina mountains. Members of communities in the North Carolina mountains were scared that they may be evacuated as many of them had been. The fires have been mostly contained to this which gave the people living in the mountains a sense of relief knowing they were not at risk anymore.
When the forest fires first started they were about 8 miles away from most cities and towns, like Asheville.
However the fires started moving closer eventually getting close enough that the lawns and driveways of peoples houses were dusted in ash from the forest fires.
“We felt unconcerned. They were far enough away that we didn’t think they would reach us.” resident of North Carolina William McNellie said.
Eventually the fires moved in closer getting to 5 miles away from Asheville and raged for another 2 weeks.
“There was ash from the fires all over the house and driveway from the forest fires,” William said.
As the fires continued to get closer they started causing people to have to evacuate some even having their houses left destroyed.
“I did know somebody who had to evacuate his home and he lost about a weeks worth of work around his house because the fires destroyed part of his house,” William said.
When the fires were put out people felt relieved that they were no longer at risk of being evacuated or losing their homes in the fire.
“You bet we were relieved when the fires went out, we almost had to evacuate,” William said.
