Sawyer Chaffin (‘14) has been golfing since he was 8, not a typical age you would see a kid golfing. He began to golf competitively when he was 12.
Earlier this year, Chaffin had the opportunity to travel to Florida to golf with Jim Furyk, who won the 2010 Fedex cup, the 2003 US Open champion, and is a future hall-of-famer.
Furyk goes to Florida to golf about five times a year, and Sawyer’s brother was able to play with Furyk the year before. This year, they called asking if both Sawyer and his dad would like to golf with Jim.
“We immediately said yes and that was my birthday present,” Chaffin said.
The Chaffins and Furyk played at a golf course called TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, and another in St. Augustine.
In the future, Sawyer says he would love to golf in college “Right now i’m looking at smaller schools such as CNU and Longwood.”
After college, Chaffin says he wants to pursue an occupation in golf or golf management.
