Many parents raise concerns about how the rezoning in Stafford County will affect their children. One major concern is transportation. Linda Burden whose child attends North Stafford High School claims that if her daughter’s bus can’t even get her to North on time then how is she going to get to Brookepoint once the rezoning happens. Many kids who live in the Park Ridge area walk to school but when they get redistricted they have to take a bus to go to a school that’s farther away from them. Another concern is how this rezoning may affect kids’ day to day routine.
“The redistricting will affect me because I live near Stafford High School so I will have to go to the new high school,” Alexandra Sanchez (‘28) said.
Many kids in the county will have to move to another school next year. This raises concerns for not only parents but also students. Students like Alexandra will have to move to the new high school unless they are in a program.
“ I feel like I will miss some of my friends who go to Colonial Forge and if I do get moved to a different school I will definitely be sad about losing some of my friends,” Johni Bangura (‘28) said,
Moving students from a school that they just started to be comfortable in can be very problematic in a way. Most students just started getting comfortable in a new environment and now the county is just taking that away from them and making them start all over again. For example freshmen, 6th graders and kindergartners are new to the school and placing them into a new school and environment can mess them up a bit.
“I don’t think I’m afraid of losing my friends that I’ve made here at Forge. I think that I will just miss them because we won’t be attending the same school anymore. But I can still keep in contact with them and stuff. I just won’t be able to see them in person like I do right now,” Dejah Bennett (‘28) said.
Most people in high school and middle school have phones with social media on them, allowing them to be in contact with friends. Whether that be friends that attend the same school or a different one they can always stay connected
“I am going to be rezoned to the new school and I’m excited but I’m also really sad because I have to leave some of the new friends I made. But also going to a new school means a fresh new start and I wouldn’t mind that at all to be honest,” Harmony Quarles (‘28) said.
Going to a new school and leaving some of the friends you’ve made can be upsetting, but being able to have a fresh start in a new school could be a good thing. Sometimes a new start is needed to get people back on track.
