These days, romantic comedies have mostly stepped up their game, in terms of mainstream films. Sometimes they tackle serious issues while also trying to give the average viewer something funny to watch. Back in the 80s and 90s, romantic comedies were always predictable, at least half of the time. Some were actually pretty good, but again, they were predictable, and didn’t offer that much new to the screen. Aside from the scenarios or stories being different.

So one could probably guess what the film is about just by the title. Just to clarify, “Marry Me” is based on the graphic novel by Bobby Crosby. The movie was released on February 11, 2022 and is set in the present time. They convey this by using some interesting camera point of views, to allow the audience to connect in the world that these characters live in. The film is directed by Kat Coiro who has mostly worked on TV show pilots that partially focus on the feminine aspect, such as “Girls5Eva,” “Dead to Me,” and even an upcoming Marvel series “She-Hulk.”

With that being said, a singer named Kat that’s played by Jennifer Lopez, gives a fine performance and essentially plays as herself and the same goes for Maluma who plays as Bastian. Not to mention, Owen Wilson as Charlie, also gives an average performance, as a regular guy who is aware of himself and how others view him. Aside from a few decent laughs throughout the film, mostly by the supporting cast, the music in the movie was tolerable. The main duet song, also called “Marry Me,” is sung by Jennifer Lopez and Maluma. With the inclusion of some other songs, by the same artists. It’s similar to today’s music that’s heard on public radio.

Kind of like “The Karate Kid” or “The Wedding Singer,” “Marry Me” is lighthearted, tone wise, and doesn’t take itself that seriously. The film’s plot is similar to those movies mentioned earlier, or 80’s and 90s rom-coms in general. It’s aware of what it is and tries to make the best out of it. Most movies these days, the run time is usually 2 hours or over. The run time for this is only an hour and forty seven minutes, and it definitely doesn’t drag or feel too slow that much, which works respectively for the film’s storyline.
