As college applications are pouring in from seniors and with the thought of college heavy in their minds, dorm decorations is a hot topic. There are a variety of different dorm themes to choose from but I don’t think it’s the theme that matters. It’s the basic elements of a dorm that really makes or breaks it. Below are five essentials that I believe complete a dorm room.
1. Light-Up Signs – Dorm lighting is not known to be the most flattering, so adding your own source of light can change the ambiance of the room. I think the perfect way to do this is by adding a customized light up sign. It can be a picture of something or your own name (my personal favorite). I think this adds a bit of personalization to the dorm and makes it feel truly like your room.
2. Flowers – Whether they’re real or fake, adding flowers to a room can brighten up the vibe and give life to the dorm. The vibrance and liveliness of flowers enhances mood and relaxation. Flowers make a room feel more alive and can add a pop of color to an otherwise dull room.
3. Photo Wall – A photo wall is the perfect way to include your hometown into your new stage of life. Developing into a new chapter in your life, there are some things you don’t want to leave behind. With the chaos of freshman year of university, creating a collage of pictures with all your family and old friends can help you remember to keep in touch with them. It’s a comforting feeling to be in a new and scary place yet still be surrounded by familiar faces to look at and remember old memories.
4. College-Specific Art – Everyone should feel pride in their college decision. So showing off your next four with a piece of college specific decor is the perfect way to bring school spirit into your dorm. Whether it says the college town you are in, a picture of your school mascot, or a fun saying your school has. Decorating your room with this can elevate the mood of your dorm and help you feel welcomed and belonging in your college community.
5. Bed Decor – This is the most important aspect of a college dorm. The bed is the first thing someone sees when they walk into a room. Having a matching comforter, sheets, pillows, blankets, and any other accessories like stuffed animals that pairs with the aesthetic of the rest of the room is essential. It completes the vibe and style of the room and pulls it all together to make the dorm truly feel like home.
These five decorations are essential to creating a cohesive dorm that reflects personality and comfort in the harmony of your own individually styled living space.
