Get to Know: Mr. Cotton

Carlos Barrera, Reporter

Mr. Cotton is one of our new teachers this year. He teaches Advanced Programming, CyberSecurity, and Computer Science in Room 320 . Get to know him!

How long have you been teaching?

This is actually my first year.

What made you want to be a teacher?

I wanted to coach football coming out of high school, and I had an IT degree so since it fit, I decided to do Business at Forge.

So besides football what are hobbies and interests do you have?

I’m the coach for the Cyber Patriot team, I’m the sponsor for the Computer Science Honors Society, which is to help students who need help programming with Java, HTML, things like that, and sorta a co-sponsor for E-Sports club.

Where did you get your degree from?

I got it from Western Governors University, which is all online.

What have you enjoyed about Forge so far?

Well honestly, the staff here is really nice to each other. My wife graduated from here; it’s where we wanted our kids to go to school. It is really where I wanted to be since I became a teacher.

What was your favorite unit as a student?

My favorite subject … Oh! graphic novel class, where we read graphic novels and interpreted them in what social messages are they giving. We read the Avengers, Civil War, all of that.

If you could teach any other subject besides the one you are teaching what would it be?

Creative writing, no doubt, I just enjoy the ability to write and create any story that comes to your head, putting pen to paper and really make it come to life, making your imagination realized through your work.

What is your greatest fear?

Definitely being buried alive, knowing that you aren’t going to make it is terrifying, just being underground and stuck there. Second would be drowning.

And what would be the best thing to get you a gift card for?

Amazon or Best Buy
