“Today is a good day to represent those kids that can’t speak up for themselves,” said J.D. Levitan (‘13).
TOMS day, also referred to as One Day, is the day where people go about their day barefoot to raise awareness about what it is like to live without shoes . Shoes aren’t only a gateway to show off money and sense of fashion; they protect your feet from getting cut and contracting diseases.
“I’m walking around on carpet floor and my feet are already sore. Imagine walking around in gravel,” said J.D.
J.D. wants to be involved in humanitarian aid and this day coincides with what he wants to do. Aside from the soreness, J.D. said being barefoot was practical since he was able to use his toes to pick things up.
“A lot of people did not react well to it, but that’s the point,” said J.D.,”The more people that think its weird are more aware.”
Stephanie Carl (‘13) said she normally comes to school without shoes on to reduce that extra step in getting ready. However, today was the day to really put that in perspective to to a society that is accustomed to shoes.
“It makes you think about the kids that can’t afford shoes,” said Stephanie.
